About

We provide Day care to adults with Learning Disabilities and Mental Health issues.

People and Gardens is based in St Austell, Cornwall as a non-profit making organisation to assist people with learning disabilities and mental health issues.  We support the individuals to develop work and social skills to promote their independence and to enable them to take control over their own lives. We use horticulture as a medium to promote physical and emotional wellbeing. The project is attended by individuals whose lives have been affected by physical and emotional difficulties. It provides them with a safe and secure environment to develop practical skills and self-worth as well friendships and confidence.  Everyone is involved in the full cycle of growing and selling vegetables, from sowing seeds to packing the bags and delivering them to the local community.

The project is run by a small team of staff who have come from an Adult Social Care background spanning over 30 years.  As well as a number of volunteers.

The aim of the project is to give a real opportunity for people in the local community to make significant changes in their lives and realise their sense of purpose. It can be extremely difficult for people with physical disabilities or emotional problems to gain work experience or find employment. This can lead to low self-esteem and a cycle of dependence on family, friends and Social Services.  The participants gain good work skills in a simulated working environment and have a truly life-changing experience benefitting them, their family and friends.
