What We Do
As a community interest company the objective of Access Cornwall is to share helpful accessibility information so those who are disabled, or have learning differences can enjoy fun activities and days out with friends and family.
- Discover healthy activities such as accessible surf lessons, walks and trails or kayaking groups around Cornwall
- Find cafes, pubs and restaurants that are accessible to all and genuinely welcome those with disabilities
- Learn about clubs, events and groups that support people with disabilities and neurodiverstiy
- Share your knowledge by joining our community of reviewers, or just sending helpful information about a place you have visited.
How we do it
If you would like to go somewhere but are worried that it will be inaccessible you can find out more information to plan your visit on our website www.accesscornwall.org.uk. This can help in a number of situations - for example, because you have mobility impairment, whether using a wheelchair, frame or just being able to walk far, or if you are autistic or have neurodiverse kids and need somewhere quieter and less crowded, or if you are deaf, or vision impaired and need information to plan a visit.
You can also follow us and join in the conversation on our social media - because all of our reviews are carried out by people who have lived experience of disability, either directly or as parents and carers - your expertise is valuable and helps others to get out of their homes and have new, fun experiences.
You can also talk to us about volunteering, we have a full rota just now, but do get in touch if you would like to join the waiting list - it's not a bad job road-testing fun places to visit!
Why We Do It
Because many people with disabilities and learning differences struggle to find new activities and places to visit that are fun. Some of the people we have supported and worked with have not been out of their home for anything other than a medical appointment for five years! They worry if the walk they want to do is manageable. Will the restaurant have steps? Will the kayaking instructor understand if your autistic child cannot speak to them? What provision is at the event you would like to attend for people with vision or hearing impairment? What we do helps people with disabilities get out and enjoy fun, healthy opportunities and it also helps Cornish organisations and businesses to learn more and meet more people with disabilities. We want everyone to enjoy all that Cornwall has to offer.
