iSightCornwall - Trustee Recruitment

iSightCornwall is a genuinely local charity, with incredible heritage dedicated to supporting blind and partially sighted people to lead active, independent, and fulfilling lives - we currently support around 4,000 people every year.

There are numerous trials and barriers to living an independent life for blind and partially sighted people. VIP’s (visually impaired people), frequently struggle to access services and play an active role in society on an equal footing with others. By 2030, it is predicted that there will be more than 31,000 people in Cornwall with sight loss, a staggering increase of 30% on today’s figures. A challenge indeed!

We are looking to appoint up to three trustees, to help us strengthen our governance and to shape the next phase of our strategic direction. This is an incredibly exciting time to join us, and a real opportunity to be part of this journey and help strengthen the organisation from within.

We are seeking trustees who are inspired by our cause and will enjoy working collegially with our board of trustees and our experienced chief executive to lead our organisation forward at an exciting time in the charity’s development.

We have identified the following skill sets to strengthen and grow our existing Board:

  • Optometry
  • Current strategic and senior leadership experience in one or more of the following:
    • Enterprise – business development
    • HR – people development
    • Finance – corporate services
    • Business – strategic planning

What you will bring:

  • A commitment to iSightCornwall
  • A willingness to devote the necessary time and effort
  • Strategic vision
  • Good, independent judgement
  • An ability to think creatively
  • A willingness to speak their mind
  • An understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship
  • An ability to work effectively as a member of a team

This is a truly unique charity, with people who care deeply about what they do. If you believe you have the experience and qualities we’re looking for, then we would love to hear from you.

If you are interested in this opportunity, we encourage confidential conversations with our recruitment partner Anna Jay, MD of Public Leaders Appointments in advance of your application. You can contact Anna at [email protected] and 07904 236348.

A full brief can be obtained from Anna with more information about iSightCornwall, the role and responsibilities of our Trustees, and details of how to apply.

Closing Date for applications is 25th November 2021

Interviews are scheduled for 7 and 8 December 2021

When :

Your commitment Trustees are elected for a seven-year term and are expected to attend up to five board meetings and the AGM every year. In addition, each trustee may be asked to one of two sub-committees of the Board, Risk and Audit Committee and Charitable Purposes Committee which each meet quarterly. Meetings take place at our office in Truro (parking available) from 5pm- 7pm; meeting times are being considered at present and there is the potential for a mix of online and in person meetings in the future. You will also be required to attend occasional strategy and development sessions and events and will need to set aside time to read through board reports prior to meetings. Trustee roles are unpaid, but we will reimburse reasonable expenses, as agreed in advance e.g. childcare, travel and accommodation, if required. We also provide transport, equipment or facilities for a trustee with a disability
