Welcome to Age UK’s ‘Beginner’s guide to getting connected to the internet’.
This guide will show you how to set up an internet connection – also known as getting online – in your home.
It will also show you how to search for information online, so you can, for example, look up opening times for the supermarket or plan a day out.
Firstly, let’s answer the big question: what is the internet? It’s a global system of networks that connect computers all over the world. You can use a device, such as a computer, tablet or a smartphone, to connect to the internet and access information and services. T
he internet is a really exciting tool. Before I started using it, I didn’t realise how much you could do with it. You can check emails, do online shopping and banking, keep in touch with family and friends, read the news, watch television and use social media.
Getting online can be beneficial to your everyday life. You can use it to look up any topic you’re interested in, from the times of local buses to finding out the potential side effects of a medication you’ve been prescribed.
