Following the success of our previous Mouth Care Matters webinars, including supporting people caring for older adults and people with learning disabilities, REACH Cornwall have developed a webinar focused on mouth care at the end of life.
NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) suggests common oral problems in palliative care can include dry mouth, painful mouth, alteration of taste and excessive salivation. These symptoms can significantly affect a person's quality of life in their final days and weeks, cause eating, drinking and communication problems, and oral discomfort and pain.*
Through our mouth care matters webinar we are aiming to highlight why mouth care is so important at the end of life, give guidance on how to deliver good end of life mouth care and the most appropriate and useful tools for this.
The session will be led by oral health and palliative care professionals including Ingrid Bowden, Clinical Mouth Care Training Lead for Health Education England and specialists from the end of life care service provided by the NHS in Cornwall.
Detailed content for this session is being developed and can be tailored to the needs of the organisations who wish to attend. We plan to include the following:
- Why do we need mouth care at the end of life?
- Differences between mouth care at end of life and at other times
- How to deliver good mouth care at the end of life
- Most appropriate tools
- Tastes for pleasure / oral intake
