SeaChange Retreats - Family & Carers Weekend Retreat

22nd & 23rd May 2021

Through surfing, yoga, mindfulness and specialist workshops, SeaChange Retreats offer participants the opportunity to take time out for themselves – to strengthen physically and emotionally; to feel restored and nourished; and to build connections with others with similar experiences.

On Saturday 22nd & Sunday 23rd May, we are running a retreats for Family and Carers of adults impacted by cancer.

We know that when you are caring for someone else, prioritising yourself and your own needs tends to drop to the bottom of the ‘to do’ list. We also know that caring has a huge impact on everyday life – work, free time, relationships, physical and mental health.
That is why we are offering a unique opportunity for our May retreat.

We have two options for you –

Either, use this as an opportunity to take time out for yourself if you are supporting someone with cancer, or if you have cancer yourself and would like to ‘give back’ to someone special who has, or is, supporting you through your treatment, encourage them to join us. This weekend offers the opportunity for family and carers to take time out for themselves; to think about and process the experience of caring; to have fun through surfing; to connect with others who have supported friends or family through cancer; to have some nurture and restoration. If attending for a weekend is too tricky (e.g. if having to find interim care for the person you care for), you are welcome to join us for just one of the days.

Or…. Come together! For those of you that have finished your treatment already and would like some time to re-connect with those that have supported you through your treatment, why don’t you book on together? We are running parallel workshops to give time for family and supporters to talk together; and for those of you with experience of cancer to think about wellbeing and the impact of cancer on your lives moving forward. All other activities will be completed together. We recommend waiting 6 months post-treatment before joining us as a guide.

Places can be booked via our website at:
https://seachangeretreats.org/book-retreat/family-carers-retreat/

Come and join us for a weekend of:

  • Surfing - Two carefully tailored beginner surf lessons give you the chance to get your feet in the wax for the first time and build confidence in the water.
  • Yoga - Stretch out post-surf and bring some peace to your mind in our yoga session, suitable for all levels and adaptable to any specific needs.
  • Two parallel workshops -
    • Caring for Carers: Join a specialist workshop led by Jenny Tarvit and Bernie DeLord, Co-Directors of Promas CIC, exploring the impact of caring and the role of self-care.
    • Life after Cancer: Join Dr Helen Reynolds, Clinical Psychologist for a session on wellbeing and readjustment after cancer, offering the opportunity to share experiences and explore tools specifically for those adjusting to life after cancer.
  • Mindfulness - Experience a taster of mindfulness with guided practices and opportunities for reflection.
  • Evening get together - Join us for a sumptuous feast on Saturday evening, offering time to catch up, reflect on the ‘stoke’ of the day and watch back the footage from the surf – every wipe-out is celebrated!
  • Sunday Sound bath - Experience a relaxing, restorative group sound bath led by Jane Everett, Sound and vibrational therapist from Silence & Noise, Cornwall. Designed to retune the nervous system and provide a safe space for deep meditation, even those who aren’t regular practitioners or find meditation impossible can access a level of relaxation they often think is impossible.

Family & Carers Retreat Details

The retreat will be run from our beautiful base in Newquay, on the North Cornwall coast. The surf lessons are delivered on Towan Beach, the perfect spot to catch some beginner waves, in partnership with Newquay Activity Centre. Workshops and wellbeing sessions will take place between the stunning 12 Beach Road and Yoga Garden spaces.

There will be multiple opportunities to connect with others who have gone through similar experiences and a delectable array of food from local suppliers to keep your energy levels topped up; alongside wellbeing activities giving time and space for reflection.

The Saturday session will start around 9am, and run through until 5pm, followed by dinner together in the evening. The Sunday session will start around 9am and run through until 3pm. Please note these times are approximate and may change.

We hope that you will leave feeling fully nourished – mentally and physically, having taken time out for yourself, and are able to carry this with you as you go.

Additional Information

We know that when you are caring for others, prioritising your own health and exercise is tricky, and you may not be at your ‘optimal’ fitness! But please don’t worry if you will be fit enough to join us – all of our activities are suited to beginners and can be tailored to your needs. We are able to make all sorts of adaptations, so please don’t worry about this getting in the way of you joining us. If you are worried, do get in touch via our website and we can talk this through with you.

If you are recovering after cancer and would like to attend with family or friends that have supported you, please each complete a booking form to reserve your spaces.

All our retreats are fuelled by brilliant local suppliers and caterers producing outstanding food so that you are ready for everything the retreat has to offer. Any dietary requests can be catered for too, so just let us know what you need.

If you are travelling from further afield we can help with accommodation recommendations. Please see the Accommodation section on our website for possible options offering discounts for SeaChange participants.

If you would like to chat through any questions you might have about the retreats, or specific needs we might need to support you with, please get in touch and we will do all we can to enable you to attend.
