Many people have no idea what we do at U3A (University of the Third Age). Firstly, it is not a university and secondly, “Third Age” covers anyone who is no longer in full-time gainful employment. So, by definition, this is usually the more mature person.
There are now over 1,000 U3As in this country, they are self-run but overseen by National Office. Each U3A has a committee where the members serve a maximum of three years, so member involvement is encouraged.
Members can join “groups” within their U3A. These groups range from Art to Philosophy and Allotment to Walking, with subjects such as Bridge, Crime Writing, Baking, Needlework, Quizzes, Pub Lunches and Table Tennis among the 31 subjects currently available. See our website for all our current groups
If your interest isn't catered for, why not start your own group? Some groups meet weekly, some monthly and some twice a month. There are groups which meet in members' homes and groups which use hired premises where the rent is shared amongst the members of that group.
There is no study and no exams. The groups are there to encourage your interest, stimulate your mind (and body in some cases) and to have some fun. Also to meet new people, make new friends and maybe improve your social life.
