About this event
Back in early April we invited childcare and education providers based in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly to chat to us over afternoon tea about how REACH Cornwall could assist with training needs. Reflecting the diverse world in an authentic way in early years settings came up as a challenge. This funded event which aims to celebrate cultural diversity through food, music, dance and more has evolved from those discussions.
This FREE talk, workshop and opportunity to celebrate diversity, is being developed and delivered in partnership with:
- Rice and Peas Community CIC - a new initiative that aims to unite the people of Cornwall under a banner of inclusion, sharing and celebrating Cornwall's cultural diversity
- TLC (Technology for Learning in Childcare) who offer a wide and varied range of training opportunities to support the development of the early years sector
We'd love those working in early years settings or as a childminder in Cornwall or the Isles of Scilly to join us from 2.30pm on Friday 7 October at the Columba Centre in St Columb Major. We are also inviting anyone who cares for or works with pre-school children and those in Key Stage 1 in any capacity to join us from 6pm for food, fun, entertainment and the informal part of the event. So whether you are a parent, grandparent or guardian of a young child, a volunteer at a toddler group/playgroup or provide activities for children in this age group, you would be very welcome.
We hope you will go away from this event feeling more informed, inspired and confident about reflecting the diverse world in your setting. We also hope this celebration of diversity will be a lot of fun and we'd really love you to be part of it!
What we have planned:
- A talk from Beresford Lee, CEO of Rice and Peas Community, on ‘Culture, Inclusion & Equity.......the bigger picture’ which will offer some background and context. Beresford is a powerful and inspiring speaker and Rice and Peas Community are seeking to create a welcoming and kind community for one and all and develop a shared sense of belonging to community in Cornwall. Using conscious, kind and integrated conversations so that everyone feels valued and heard. Challenging difficult issues and drawing out what we have in common as springboards for positive and inclusive change.
- Sophia Rose, a Childcare Assessor with TLC will then lead a workshop offering ideas about how to reflect the diverse world and make it integral to everyday practice. Sophia is an early years professional with a masters degree in education, specialising in early years and special education needs. With over 10 years of experience, she led a 96 place nursery to Ofsted Outstanding, developed one of the first Beach Schools in the country and is passionate about inclusivity and diversity for all.
- Food and entertainment. They'll also be the opportunity to chat informally, share ideas and celebrate cultural diversity through delicious Caribbean food, music and dance. The food will be cooked freshly by Rice and Peas Community.
