Green Gym is a programme developed by the The Conservation Volunteers (TCV) that combines physical activity, environmental conservation, and connection with nature. Instead of exercising in a traditional gym, participants improve their health and wellbeing by taking part in practical outdoor conservation tasks.

Activities often include woodland management, habitat restoration, path maintenance, hedge laying, tree planting, and the removal of invasive species. These tasks provide meaningful physical activity while directly improving local ecosystems.

A key part of the Green Gym approach is reconnecting people with the natural world. By working regularly in woodland and river environments, volunteers experience the seasonal changes of the landscape, develop a deeper understanding of wildlife and habitats, and build a stronger sense of stewardship for the environment.

In woodland volunteering, this can include:

  • Clearing invasive plants such as Himalayan balsam or rhododendron

  • Coppicing and thinning woodland to improve biodiversity

  • Maintaining footpaths and drainage

  • Planting native trees and restoring habitats

  • Caring for riverbanks and historic landscape features

This combination of physical activity, conservation work, and time spent in nature supports mental wellbeing, reduces isolation, and helps people build a lasting relationship with the landscapes we help care for.

Please bring sturdy footwear, appropriate clothing as this is working outdoors and a flask - we provide biscuits and cake.
