Read Easy Cornwall
There are over 2 million adults in England (with around 25,000 in Cornwall) who struggle to read.
Read Easy Cornwall is a legally and independently run group, managed by local volunteers, and affiliated to Read Easy UK, the only national organisation in the country which provides reading coaching for adults who want to learn to read.
We offer free, friendly, confidential, one-to-one reading coaching. This can be done either face-to-face or online via Zoom, depending on the reader's preference.
Readers meet with their coach twice a week for a 30-minute session in an approved local venues which provide space where they are not overlooked, but where there will always be other people around for safeguarding purposes.
They work at their own pace through a programme called 'Turning Pages' from the Shannon Trust. The reader and coach are supported by a local Coordinator and a Literacy Specialist is on hand if needed. An adult reading journey usually takes up to two years.
As people discover that they can read, their self-esteem grows, and they experience a real sense of excitement about the many opportunities that are now open to them – sometimes for the first time.
Note: Read Easy Cornwall is a relatively new group, formed in September 2022, and we are taking a 'reader-led' approach to reflect the thinly spread population. This means that while we have some initially trained coaches, we aim to recruit and train coaches as near as possible to the reader. This also applies to reading venues, so it’s helpful when new readers are referred, to know of suitable possible venues, such as libraries, community centres, etc
